First Look !!! Native Instruments NI Maschine [ Coming this November/December 2012 ]

First Look !!! Native Instruments NI Maschine [ Coming this November/December 2012 ]

Native Instruments announced the brand new generation of the Maschine and Maschine Mikro -and it looks like the Kontrol F1 won’t be the only RGB backlit piece of kit in Native Instruments’ lineup for much longer. Read more about the new Mk2 Maschine units inside!

The new Mk2 editions of the units come in both black and white, with all 16 of the pads backlit in colors that correspond to the colors in the new Maschine 1.8 software, which has been updated to provide color support and a few new effects. Additionally, the software now comes bundled with a free version of the ubiquitous (sometimes too much so) Massive soft-synth.

One final major item to note with this new generation of Maschine products – NI is now offering customizable kits for Maschine users to change the color of the faceplate and knobs on the device, with colors offered in gold, red, blue, pink, and grey.

Naturally, it wouldn’t be a Maschine launch if we didn’t have a video of finger-drumming legend Jeremy Ellis using the new products and showing off each of the features throughly – have a look below!

And NI’s usually teutonic industrial minimalism appears to have been cast aside with this release too. Not only are Pioneer going all Day-Glo with their new WeGO controller, but NI are also putting out White versions of the 2 Maschine models, and also providing some multi-coloured faceplates. But the big question is this: WHERE ARE THE WOODEN TRIMS?

There’s no doubt that this new hardware and v1.8 of the software (free to registered users) are wonderful, and I crave them badly even though my somewhat rusty and ancient beatmaking skills couldn’t possibly do them justice. But given the glaring cosmetic similarity to the Kontrol F1, where is this all going?

I cast my mind back to NAMM, specifically an image being projected on the wall at NI’s LA office. Daniel Haver was talking about integration, and on screen was NI’s holy trinity of products - Komplete, Traktor and Maschine all linked together. And with this release, I feel that we’re beginning to see that happening. The Remix Deck workflow is clip launching with knobs on – a workflow ideally suited to Maschine as well. Just how this will work out is uncertain, but I’d put good money on the yet to be announced or even discussed Traktor Pro 3 bringing them together, especially as NI seem to be holding back at v1.8.

So seeing as the RGB buttons are working their way through the NI hardware roster, I wonder what will be next? And when? I’m pretty sure I’m bang on in my guesswork, but I’ll let you all thrash it out in the comments. That is if this isn’t too old a story to comment on of course.

The Mashine Mk2 and Maschine Mikro Mk2 are set to be in stores on October 1st.

Plug & Play – USB Bus Powered
Full MIDI Output – Map to other DJ Software
Denon DJ ‘Professional Grade’ Construction
Intuitive File Browsing Controls
Built-in Audio interface
MIC Input /Line Input

Now is the chance to step-up from the dance floor to the DJ Booth and ‘own the party’.

Denon DJ has been rocking crowds and owning dance floors since the dawn of DJing so we know how to capture your desire for music and offer you the very best gear for bringing any party to life.

The brand new MC2000 brings, for the first time, the very best in Denon DJ professional quality and technologies, then integrates them it into a product that’s accessible to everyone. From the ‘plug and play’ link up with Serato DJ Intro to the intuitive layout and controls on the deck, now is your time to join the new generation of DJ Superstars.

Mix like a Pro.

DJ equipment can make or break a performance. There are many choices to make when you first lay down a mix on your first deck, first mixer or first controller and it’s easy to get lost amongst sub-standard gear or controllers designed to be used at home in the bedroom.

With the MC2000, DJing has hit the masses with one single controller that is as much at home being used day-to-day to practice as it is being taken to a gig and used effortlessly in front of screaming crowds.

With an inbuilt professional-grade USB Audio Interface there’s no need to use your computers processing power just to output sound or buy extra gear to get club-quality audio from your speakers. The inbuilt interface gives the option of running true high quality audio out of the MC2000 to a serious speaker set-up wherever you are; in a club, at a gig, or just at home setting up for a night of mashing-up tracks.

Plug & Play.

Fresh DJing relies on relentless practice and knowing your music so why should you wait to get home to start dropping beats? The MC2000 doesn’t need to be plugged into a mains power supply for you to get thrashing out tunes – it’s USB Bus powered which means if you’re hanging with friends and want to show off your latest mix then you simply need to power up your laptop and plug in the MC2000 with a USB cable (supplied). It’s as easy as that because the MC2000 has been designed with Serato DJ Intro software in mind, complete with a layout which reflects exactly what you are doing on the laptop screen. Serato DJ Intro detects the controller automatically and is ready to work from the moment you take out of the box and plug in – giving you true ‘plug & play’ functionality*.

Serato DJ Intro Software.

Serato DJ Intro is the newest piece of software to join Serato’s illustrious DJ range, which includes popular professional DJ solutions, Scratch Live and ITCH. With over 10 years’ experience in software development, Serato bring their unique approach to this new plug-and-play system.

“We’ve been very fortunate to work with the world’s top DJs”, says Sam Gribben, C.E.O. of Serato Audio Research. “We’re looking forward to offering a whole new generation of DJs the chance to discover the tools that professionals around the world have trusted for years.”

Serato DJ Intro allows for traditional two deck mixing of digital music files from a computer. Large music collections can be managed with the Serato Crate system, plus advanced iTunes® integration allows for instant access to existing library and playlist information.

Design & Build.

With its portable design and solid build; the MC2000 is the ultimate weapon in your DJ bag, completely redefining the quality and usability of its class. With every single detail aimed at improving value and retaining simplicity without compromising features and sound quality.

The layout takes the very best from the already successful MC6000 and MC3000 platforms and puts it into an even more compact unit that’s tweaked especially to work seamlessly with Serato DJ Intro and similar DJ software.

The jog wheels and faders are lifted straight from the MC6000 Professional DJ Controller to retain the professional grade and high-quality feel that Denon DJ customers have come to expect. Built to take even the most enthusiastic mixing and hard-core techniques, the MC2000 stands tall amongst the competition as the only true professional grade product that inspires even the freshest of newcomers to pick up and join the DJing community.

Looking at the pictures, this is aimed directly at beginners. It lacks some of the essential bells and whistles that some quite literally cannot function without, but it does seem to cram quite a lot into its diminutive 400x240mm chassis. I’d rather find out from a beginner what they think is missing.

What excites me the most is Serato’s DJ Intro. While way too many people turn their noses up at it because it’s not pro enough, I actually think it deserves a little more credit. When first announced, Serato were worried that they had put too much into it, but given that ever-raising bar for DJs, I think they pitched it perfectly. The subsequent issue has been including it in units with way more power than DJ Intro offers. But that’s another story. However, the MC2000 is of course MIDI-mappable, but I struggle to see how the mapping could be any better, unless some gifted mapper got hold of it and turned it inside out.

The actual tightness of of integration that DJ Intro offers is amazing. The jog wheel in particular on DJ Intro enabled units is by far better than the price its pitched at. You can see DJ Wreckdown in the video pulling off some cool scratch tricks on the unit. Not sure about the sharpness of the fader curve though. And no, I do not know if an Innofader can fit into it.

And so to price – the expected price (still some discussion apparently).

Given the performance I’m expecting from it, I’d say that the MC2000 is likely to be a winner with the hip young things, and to be honest many other people too. For experienced DJs, this is priced to allow anyone to buy one as a cost effective throw it in the back of your car backup.

I like the look of the MC2000. It seems to have every basic covered (except recording, which is annoying, but solvable via 3rd party software), and should keep DJs of all styles and abilities happy. I’m looking forward to chucking this around the worxlab very soon.

Pioneer DDJ-WeGO Digital DJ Controller for entry level beginner dj [ Coming this October/November 2012 ]

Pioneer DDJ-WeGO Digital DJ Controller for entry level beginner dj [ Coming this October/November 2012 ]

ERGO… AERO… and now WeGO. Yep – Pioneer own the high-end, but in a market where media is a legacy format, they need to get a grip of the hearts and credit cards of the biggest part of the new market – entry-level controller craving noobs. Undoubtedly having seen the stellar sales (you have no idea) of units like Numark’s Mixtrack, Pioneer have brought forth their own take on this market – the Virtual DJ driven tutti-fruiti coloured DDJ-WeGO controller.

The digital DJ industry is in full controller-announcing swing this week, and it looks like Denon won’t be the only manufacturer to announce a new ultra-portable beginner controller. Pioneer has just released details on their new DDJ-WeGO controller, a basic two channel controller designed to work with a custom edition of Virtual DJ LE.

The unit is pretty small, with a 14″ X 8″ face, and has design similarities to the Pioneer EFX-1000 and the DDJ-ERGO units. As with the Denon MC-2000, we’re expecting this to be very specifically targeted for beginners, as it just has a basic RCA master out and 1/4″ microphone in and is mostly focused on looks. Remember the “Pulse Effects” lighting found on the DDJ-ERGO? That’s on this unit as well. Oh, and you can choose from five different colors for the body of the controller: white, black, red, green, and violet.

Pioneer expands its controller line-up with the all-new DDJ-WeGO – the fun and affordable DJ console for beginners.

Mixing music just got easier, and a lot more fun, with the DDJ-WeGO. Anyone with a passion for dance music can play tracks and mix tunes with Pioneer’s compact, easy-to-use DJ console.

Aspiring DJs playing their favourite music through DJ software on their laptops can now use the WeGO’s buttons and knobs to control the sound and get a hands-on DJing experience. The popular DJ software package VirtualDJ LE is included so the controller can be used straight out of the box, and WeGO customers will also be eligible for a free upgrade to VirtualDJ 8 LE[1] upon release. The WeGO will be compatible with a variety of popular DJ software packages to suit any style including Algoriddim’s djay.

Setting up is simple: just plug the WeGo into a laptop and start up the software. And the WeGO’s ergonomic controls and user-friendly interface make it easy for aspiring to learn the ropes. The console’s Pulse Control lights guide beginners through their performances by showing when beats are matched, which effects have been activated, and which decks are in use. So it won’t be long before anyone new to DJing picks up the skills to perform and share their sets with friends.

Once beginners have gained confidence, there’s a range of advanced features inherited from Pioneer’s professional, industry-leading products – such as Beat Sync, sound effects and loops – waiting to be discovered. For the more intrepid DJ, the WeGO even boasts the capacity for four-deck mixing.

With five striking colours to choose from, aspiring DJs can pick a WeGO that really reflects their personality. And they can customise the console’s jog wheel lights for an even more personalised set-up.

Lightweight and compact, the portable console can even be carried in an ordinary rucksack.

The DDJ-WeGO will be available from October 2012 at an SRP of 249 GBP/299 EUR, including VAT.

DDJ-WeGO: Mix it up.

Key features of the DDJ-WeGO

1. Pulse Control lights add a visual element to learning to mix
Inherited from Pioneer’s popular DDJ-ERGO controller, the Pulse Control lights add an exciting visual element to DJing. LEDs on the jog wheel show which features have been activated, and how accurate the mixing is, for an even more engaging experience. Plus, music lovers can customise the colour of the LEDs so they can put their personality into every performance.

LED channel faders

Red LEDs in the WeGO’s channel faders show the beat of the track playing to help aspiring DJs keep time. And the intensity of the light reflects the sound output levels, so they’ll know if they’ve left a track playing after the mix.

Mix Pulse

Mix Pulse helps beginner DJs quickly master the art of beat matching. Lights around the jog wheel show the beat of all the tracks in play. The lights shine more intensely the closer the match, so novice DJs can easily see how their skills are progressing.

Launch Pulse

A red light travels from the Load button to the jog wheel when a track has loaded successfully so DJs know when a track is ready to play.

FX Pulse

LED light patterns around the jog wheel show which effects and filters they’ve engaged. And the lights get brighter as the effects and filters are applied more intensely.

Jog FX

The WeGO’s effects can be further manipulated by scratching and spinning the jog wheel to add another layer of richness to the sound.

2. Hands-on mixing with VirtualDJ LE DJ software
The WeGO makes using DJ software simple and fun. Beginner DJs can use the console’s tactile, ergonomic controls to manipulate the software’s features and functions for a truly interactive experience.

The WeGO comes with VirtualDJ LE, and the console’s interface conveniently mirrors the software’s layout so beginners can easily see which features they’ve engaged. When they press a button, twist a dial or turn the jog wheel on the console, their actions are reflected on-screen. VirtualDJ LE also comes with coloured skins designed specially to match the WeGO.

Aspiring DJs can instantly access four pre-loaded samples. The hot cue function lets them start tracks from pre-selected points. Once DJs master the basic functions they can get to grips with advanced features such as beat sync, sound effects and loops. And the console’s four-deck control allows them to mix up to four tracks at once, with the capability of recording mixes within VirtualDJ LE.

The WeGO is also compatible with other software packages so aspiring DJs can work with the software that suits their style best.

3. Five colour options and customisable lights for a personalised controller
Available in black, green, red, violet and white, there’s a WeGO model to suit every personality. And the console’s jog wheel LEDs can be customised, with seven stunning colour options to choose from. Further personalisation of the WeGO is possible as users can blend their own colour combinations on the jog wheel LEDs.

4. Portable, compact design for easy transport and simple set up
No bigger than a laptop, the WeGO is compact, lightweight and portable. Its layout and design are modeled on Pioneer’s popular DDJ-ERGO controller, with the added bonus of a user-friendly jog wheel. The console also boasts rubber pots on its dials for a more tactile DJing experience.

Set up is simple too as the WeGO is completely powered by USB. Just one cable connecting the console to a laptop is all that is needed to get going. Plus, the strategically positioned side panel connections allow cables to be hooked up to the sides of the controller rather than the back, so DJs won’t have to worry about cables snaking across their laptop keyboards.

Waving the high-end flag in a market hit by recession is a lonely job, thus Pioneer are after a very large slice of the entry-level market with this move. Looking a little Hercules-esque, it’s essentially a massively scaled down ERGO. The styling is very similar, but the paint job is a clear nod to the lifestyle driven fashion conscious youth market. And here’s a really important factor – with the DDJ-WeGO, they’ll be able to pop this in their rucksack. And being USB powered, they’ll be able to play just about anywhere with it. BOOM – properly portable. I told Pioneer that I thought the ERGO was too big – you couldn’t pop it in a bag, unless that bag was specifically for a controller.

And we all know it’s just a matter of time before this become Serato DJ Intro ready, and most probably algoriddim djay compatible too. This also screams iPad, so make that happen as well.

One thing I’ve seen on there actually annoys me and that’s the C and D buttons. Must we awkwardly drag 4 channels in this tiny unit? And why no gain controls? I know it’s the done thing these days to redline everything, but unless you instil the absolute basics of sound into beginners, then they’ll always crank up the levels and piss off sound guys. Perhaps that’s why all the meter LEDs are Red anyway.

So it’s small, cheap, fashion friendly and wears the right logo to grab attention. As I once read – it’s easy to sell a budget premium brand than it is to sell a premium budget brand, and this falls very much into the former category. Expect to see this on many Christmas lists and with good reason. I still reserve full judgement until I’ve laid hands on it, but it has all the essential ingredients to keep the target market happy.

And pre-empting the almost certain “toy” comments – I draw your attention to the word “beginner” used repeatedly in the PR, so the target market has been made abundantly clear. Don’t even go there – you’ll just sound foolish.

Taste wise, the Black, Red and White options make a lot of sense and look pretty good me. I cannot see any logic in the Green and Violet ones. Aside from being pretty awful colour-wise, unless Pioneer plan to make matching HDJ-500 headphones, there’s nothing to go with the WeGO in their range. This is however about aesthetics and taste, and for all I know the Green and Violet editions could fly off the shelves because they’re this or next season’s on-trend yoof colours.

Price-wise, will be available probably towards the end of September… you know… for the Christmas market. I think we can expect the Pioneer stand at BPM to look like an Apple store. I look forward to some quick and nasty fun with this.
And that Superstar DJs headline that’s in your head – too easy and way too cheesy. Let’s see if anyone else does it.

New Pioneer XDJ-AERO digital wireless DJ system media player [ Coming October 2012 ]

New Pioneer XDJ-AERO digital wireless DJ system media player [ Coming October 2012 ]

Pioneer presents the XDJ-AERO, the first-ever wireless all-in-one DJ system, and the first native player for rekordbox™ music management software

31st July 2012: Pioneer has broken the mould yet again with the XDJ-AERO, the industry’s first[1] Wi-Fi enabled all-in-one DJ system and native rekordbox™ player.
The groundbreaking DJ system is set to change the way DJs play by liberating them from endless cables and connections. In an industry first, the XDJ-AERO allows DJs to load music wirelessly from smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs[2], instantly taking the hassle out of set up. A multipurpose unit, the XDJ-AERO also works with Pioneer’s new mobile application, functions as a standalone mixer and can be used as a MIDI and HID controller.

The XDJ-AERO creates its own private Wi-Fi network, allowing DJs to connect to up to four wireless devices at once. The audience can even get involved by sending tracks from their own smartphones or tablets to the XDJ-AERO for a more interactive
experience.

And, as the first native player for Pioneer’s rekordbox music management software, the XDJ-AERO puts all of the software’s features and functions right at DJs’ fingertips. rekordbox allows DJs to create and edit playlists on the fly; view beat grids; analyse BPM; and load wave forms during their sets.

Compatible with Pioneer’s new mobile application[3] for smartphones and tablets, the XDJ-AERO makes DJing truly mobile. DJs can use the mobile application to manage their music on the road and then wirelessly load their tracks and playlists to the XDJ-AERO.

DJs can switch between the XDJ-AERO’s mobile and USB inputs at the touch of a button. And the DJ system boasts all of their favourite features, including sample banks, Sound Colour Filters and rekordbox quantized beat sync.

The XDJ-AERO also functions as a 24-bit audio interface, MIDI controller for Traktor and HID controller for Virtual DJ software. And it can be used as a stand-alone mixer when connected to CDJs and turntables.

A premium piece of kit both inside and out, the XDJ-AERO has the look and feel of a pro-DJ product with its classic black finish and sleek aluminium faceplate. And, at just 45 mm thick, the portable, lightweight XDJ-AERO is the world’s thinnest combined player and mixer.

The XDJ-AERO: the world’s first wireless all-in-one DJ player, mixer and MIDI controller.

Key features of the XDJ-AERO

1. INDUSTRY FIRST: Wirelessly connect up to four devices
By creating an ad hoc network, the XDJ-AERO can sync with up to four Wi-Fi enabled devices at once, without the need for any extra equipment. For the first time, DJs can use smartphones, tablets and computers to wirelessly load rekordbox music to their decks.
DJs can use the XDJ-AERO to control wireless devices remotely so they can browse tracks and load them directly to their decks even if the device is not in their hands.
And the new mobile application allows DJs to use their smartphones and tablets as remote controls for the XDJ-AERO. With USB source selected, DJs can browse music and load tracks on the XDJ-AERO using the devices’ bigger, touch-sensitive screens.
The audience can send music from their wireless devices to the XDJ-AERO, though tracks will not load until the DJ accepts them. If a device goes out of range while a track is being played an emergency loop is created so there is no break in the music. And if a call is made on a smartphone mid-track, the music will continue to play as long as the device supports multitasking.
Plus, by switching the XDJ-AERO’s music source from wireless to USB, DJs can play tracks on both decks from a single rekordbox-ready storage device.

2. Includes all the popular features from Pioneer’s pro-range
The XDJ-AERO brings together all of the most exciting features from Pioneer’s most popular multi-format players and mixers, including:
Beat effects[4]: the XDJ-AERO boasts the most user-friendly and popular effects from Pioneer’s DJM range – Trans, Flanger, Roll and Echo.
Post-fader: the effects are applied to the sound after the fader, allowing the sound to fade out naturally rather than stopping suddenly when the DJ cuts the source audio with the faders.
Sound color effects: borrowed from the DJM series, the Sound Color Filters add high- and low-pass filters to the beat effects for even more creativity
Sample banks: pre-loaded with four samples.
Auto Loop: tracks can be automatically looped at specified positions.
Quantize: DJs will never miss a beat again as the quantize function automatically synchronises the beat of rekordbox-ready tracks and effects.

3. Automatic features that make perfect mixes a breeze
Beat Sync[5]: automatically syncs all tracks to the beat to the master deck using rekordbox beat grid information.
Auto Mix: automatically mixes each track within a playlist if DJs need to step away from the deck during long sets.

4. Performance features and sample playback
INDUSTRY FIRST Jog Drum: a more DJ-friendly way of engaging samples. DJs simply load a sample onto the deck and press Jog Drum; they can then trigger and scratch the samples by drumming directly on the jog wheel for more control and creativity.
Sample Launch: with four samples pre-loaded onto each deck, DJs simply push Sample Launch once to perform with the currently engaged sample. By holding down Sample Launch, they can select another sample to perform with. Samples can also be launched using the XDJ-AERO’s effects, loops and pitch controls.

5. One-touch recording of popular mixes
Inherited from Pioneer’s DJM-350 mixer, the XDJ-AERO allows DJs to record their creations directly to USB as uncompressed CD-quality WAV files.
6. MIDI and HID control for ultimate flexibility
The XDJ-AERO can be used as a MIDI controller for Traktor and HID controller for Virtual DJ software.

7. Connect external hardware to use as a stand-alone mixer
For maximum flexibility, the unified player and mixer unit also has inputs to connect external hardware, such as CDJs or turntables, so DJs can use it as an independent mixer.

8. Premium design and build looks the part every time
With its classic black finish, sleek aluminium faceplate, blue LED lights and Pioneer’s industry-standard interface, the XDJ-AERO looks professional in any venue.

9. High-end components for superb sound in any environment
The XDJ-AERO’s audio circuits are the same as those used in Pioneer’s pro-DJ equipment to guarantee pristine sound reproduction. And full digital processing has been used to minimise distortion and noise from A/D-D/A conversion.

10. Other features
Onboard 44.1kHz/24bit high resolution soundcard
Independent three-band equalizer
Dual headphone output –minijack for inner-ear headphones and standard jack for full-size headphones
Four-colour LCD displaying 18 languages
Mic input and balanced TRS output

Main features
1) Premium black color give impression of chic and refinement
“DDJ-ERGO LIMITED” is finished with a chic and refined design that looks great even in modern interiors, featuring a main unit in black with satin black for its side panels and glossy black for the top panel, chrome-plated PLAY/CUE buttons, and a JOG dial with four white glowing LEDs, etc.
2) PULSE CONTROL for DJ performance using light
“PULSE CONTROL” uses light that gives you a visual representation of DJ performance, by build-in LED on each channel faders, and a translucent JOG “PURE PLATTER” that has a red and blue LED around the ring.
①「MIX PULSE」
A blue LED on the jog wheel shows how close the phase of the mix is during a mix. The bigger the difference in pitch, the weaker the light. The closer the match, the more intense the light shines.
②「BEAT PULSE」
LEDs in the channel faders match the beat of the track in play. Plus the strength of the light reflects output levels, so you always know if a track is still in the mix.
③「LAUNCH PULSE」
A red light travels from the Load button towards the Jog Wheel to indicate when a track has been loaded.
④「FX PULSE」
Various light patterns on the Jog Wheel clearly show which FX DJs have applied.

Reloop Beatmix Digital DJ Controller

Reloop Beatmix Digital DJ Controller

2-deck virtual DJ all-in-one MIDI DJ controller
Reloop Beatmix is the first controller developed especially for the popular worldwide software platform, Virtual DJ. Newbies and experienced DJs alike will soon familiarise themselves with this intuitive 2-channel controller, and in no time at all, can be up and running in the mix.

The newly developed, ultra flat, aluminium jog wheel with its 14cm circumference is equipped with 2 x jog modes for vinyl-like scratching and fast track browsing. A large transport section and the hot cue panel allows triggering and remixing whilst having a double functionality via a shift layer for all control elements. Users can easily select effects and filters to fire them off by means of the clearly arranged effects section, and with the dedicated beat mash mode, it's possible to creatively chop up a track with a simple push of a button. For even more live remixing possibilities, beat-synchronous loops of various different lengths can be set up on the fly. The linear arrangement of the 2-channel mixer and the popular Trax Encoder with its deck load buttons, simply makes classic mixing applications intuitive, comfortable, and fun.

The Reloop Beatmix comes with an integrated USB audio interface to conveniently send the output to a Hi-Fi or PA system. Additionally, headphones and even a microphone can be connected directly into the unit. Needless to say, professional ASIO drivers are also on-board to offer ultra low latency for tight track control and responsiveness whilst in the mix.

The focus here is clearly about uncomplicated mixing. Unpack, connect and start mixing immediately. Reloop Beatmix: mix your beats straight out of the box.
